Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation, a Houston-based dredging contractor, recently celebrated a significant milestone with the delivery of two Damen 3013 Multi Cats, the Cape Hatteras and the Cape Canaveral. These vessels, constructed by Conrad Shipyard in Morgan City, Louisiana, mark a pivotal moment for both the company and the U.S. dredging industry.

Chris Gunsten, Senior Vice President of Project Services and Fleet Engineering at Great Lakes, emphasized the notable safety enhancements brought by the Multi Cats to their dredge pipeline operations. These improvements include the ability to securely perform pipe handling and connections on deck, significantly reducing the risk of man overboard incidents. The vessels also enhance pipe and anchor operations and reduce the risk of soft tissue injuries, thanks to the Multi Cats’ two cranes, multiple winches, and wire tugger arrangements.

The Multi Cats measure approximately 99 feet in length and are powered by three EPA Tier III Caterpillar C32 TTA engines, capable of achieving speeds of 10.2 knots and a maximum bollard pull of around 32 short tons. Onboard Karl Senner, LLC has equipped the M/V Cape Hatteras with three WAF 464L Reverse Reduction Gearboxes and a 2 Station Main Propulsion Control System, complete with Vulkan Torsional Couplings, Mechanical Trailing Pumps, and Temperature Control Valves.

These versatile dredge support vessels feature two large winches and two deck cranes, enabling them to handle submerged and floating pipelines, anchor handling, and logistics supply. The elimination of the need for various floating support equipment, such as derrick barges, towboats, and anchor barges, enhances operational efficiency.

The Cape Hatteras and the Cape Canaveral are the first Damen Multi Cats to be constructed in the United States. They fully comply with the stability criteria set by the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, underlining their significance in the American maritime industry.
